We are committed to pursuing equity and justice in our lab and broader community. We acknowledge systemic inequities against minoritized groups that are embedded within our institutions. These injustices include police violence, mass incarceration, and race-based discrimination against Black, Indigenous, and other peoples of color, as well as anti-Asian discrimination and violence. The systems that uphold these injustices are the product of individual conscious and unconscious biases and modern and historical efforts to uphold racial inequities. We hold ourselves accountable to work against these biases and inequities in our scholarship as well as in our advocacy, both at UofSC, and within our broader community.

Towards these efforts, we have five lab resolutions related to justice, equity, and inclusion:

1) Create and maintain an inclusive, diverse, and equitable lab space for people from all walks of life and backgrounds;

2) Denounce racism, discrimination, and violence against minoritized groups;

3) Produce scholarship that seeks to understand and interrupt injustice and inequalities;

4) Educate ourselves on historic and modern injustices and the perspectives of minoritized populations;

5) Advocate for the justice and equitable treatment of oppressed peoples (especially children and youth) in our local community and nationally.

At the local level, we recognize that the University of South Carolina was built by enslaved peoples, that many of the buildings at UofSC are named after people who owned enslaved persons, and who expressed deeply racist ideologies. We affirm the Presidential Commision on University History to rename buildings and increase education of the student body and broader community on the history of the University of South Carolina.
